FAQ

Q: Why is customs declaration important?

A: A customs declaration is a legal document that declares the value and contents of what you're importing or exporting. It's used by customs authorities in both the origin country and the destination country to ensure trades are compliant and pay the correct taxes and duties.

Q: Why do you need a customs declaration?

A: You must declare all food, plants, animal and related products that you import into Canada. Failure to do so can result in your good being confiscated or you may be subject to a fine or prosecution. Some of these items are prohibited or regulated because they can carry foreign animal and plant pests and diseases.

Q: What are the advantages of having customs?

A: The establishment of customs unions is beneficial to economies in the long term. It helps small economies tap industries that may not have been accessible with domestic trade only. They can achieve large external economies of scale within the union from transport and infrastructure.

Q: What is the value of customs declaration?

A: The value you declare for personal shipments should be the cost at which you purchased the item; for customs declarations in the case of retail shipments, the value should be the price at which you intend to sell the item. Customs use this value to clear your shipment and determine taxes and duties.

Q: What does a customs declaration do?

A: Declarations are used by importers, or licensed customs brokers acting on their behalf, to clear imported goods from customs control into: the commerce of Australia/home consumption - via an Import Declaration or Self-Assessed Clearance Declaration, or. a licensed warehouse - via a Warehouse Declaration.

Q: What is the importance of documentation in customs?

A: Customs documents serve as a detailed record of goods being transported and offer essential details for customs authorities, including invoices, packaging lists, import/export licences, trade agreements and certificates. They are essential for assessing duties and taxes and for verifying trade compliance.

Q: What are the main purposes of a customs declaration?

A: A customs declaration is an official document that lists and gives details of goods that are being imported or exported. In legal terms, a customs declaration is the act whereby a person indicates the wish to place goods under a given customs procedure.

Q: How long does customs declaration take?

A: Typically, it can take anywhere from a few hours to several days. Air freight usually clears faster than ocean freight. However, unexpected delays can occur, especially if a shipment requires detailed inspection or if there's a backlog at the port of entry.
